Review: Pedals: Speedplay Zero SS and Zero Chromoly
So, you want to lighten your bike up a little or you consider yourself a cyclist what likes to have the lightest components on their bike without sacrificing durability or the cool factor. First off, not many people should see your pedals. If they are, that means you are not riding your bike enough or you are in the dirt with a concussion because you took that hairpin turn a little too sharp. The first reason is unacceptable. The second is better but not the best answer. The ultimate answer is that they should never be seen until you get off your bike to walk up to the podium.

You want to look like you own the really expensive Zero Tis but do not want to break the bank? Go for the Stainless Steel (SS) Zero's by Speedplay. They are relatively light and come in a bunch of colors. Unlike the X-2 and X-5 pedals, you can change how much float you want. Sure, you could open up the adjustment screws to allow something like 15 degrees of float, but if you just want to do that, why not buy the X-1 pedals? Either way, you can adjust these pedals via the cleats to any type of position that you want to do. When adjusted properly, I believe that you can produce better power and feel more connected with your bike. The first statement might be a mere belief, but I know the second statement is a fact.

The drawback to the Speedplay franchise involves the regular dry lubing of the cleats/pedal. Furthermore, the cleats themselves wear out very quickly if you ride lots of miles on a regular basis. The metal springs will literally become flat instead of the brand new round shape. Get ready to fork out $40 for a new set of cleats. I believe that the cleats from Speedplay are the most expensive of any cleat on the market. Also, remember there is a weight limit to these pedals. Make sure your choose wisely.
