Review: Pedals: Speedplay X5
Speedplay makes a good product. These pedals are good for any beginner. Sure, they might cost a lot more than many of the other pedals on the market, but they give you the ability to gain confidence in learning how to use clipless pedals. Instead of worrying and fretting about how to flip a pedal like a Shimano, Look, Time, etc, you merely have to put your foot down and wiggle your foot a little for the mechanism to engage.

As the loweset priced model in Speedplay's pedal line, these pedals fit their place nicely. In reality, they are one of the best pedals in its price range. They spin smoothly and are built with a chromoly spindle. It keeps the price down and allows you the option to upgrade your choice of pedal or model within reach.

These pedals have nearly zero need for adjustements. Forget about measuring EXACTLY where your cleat needs to be on your shoes. Sure, you could move them up and down and side to side. However, with the huge amount of float, you can just not worry about how your feet are attached and think about how you want to counter the attack by your companions.

The drawback to the Speedplay franchise involves the regular dry lubing of the cleats/pedal. Furthermore, the cleats themselves wear out very quickly if you ride lots of miles on a regular basis. The metal springs will literally become flat instead of the brand new round shape. Get ready to fork out $40 for a new set of cleats. I believe that the cleats from Speedplay are the most expensive of any cleat on the market.
