Review: Pedals: Speedplay X2
Speedplay makes a good product. These pedals are good for any beginner. Sure, they might cost a lot more than many of the other pedals on the market, but they give you the ability to gain confidence in learning how to use clipless pedals. Instead of worrying and fretting about how to flip a pedal like a Shimano, Look, Time, etc, you merely have to put your foot down and wiggle your foot a little for the mechanism to engage. In my book, the Speedplay X-2s have a special place because they were the first clipless pedals I ever used. Furthermore, they are bomb-proof. The set that came into my hands had been used for over a year by a semi-professional bike rider from Southern California. By the markings on the pedals, no one could deny that the pedals had been used. Scratches, pits, and a scuffs could be seen on all surfaces of the pedals. But the true test of the pedal is to see how well they spin especially paying attention to the feel of any grit or impediments to the spin. These pedals spin smoothly without any hint of grit coming incontact with the ball bearings. Lastly, these pedals have nearly zero need for adjustements. Forget about measuring EXACTLY where your cleat needs to be on your shoes. Sure, you could move them up and down and side to side. However, with the huge amount of float, you can just not worry about how your feet are attached and think about how you want to counter the attack by your companions.

The drawback to the Speedplay franchise involves the regular dry lubing of the cleats/pedal. Furthermore, the cleats themselves wear out very quickly if you ride lots of miles on a regular basis. The metal springs will literally become flat instead of the brand new round shape. Get ready to fork out $40 for a new set of cleats. I believe that the cleats from Speedplay are the most expensive of any cleat on the market.
