Medical School Guide 2008 - Volunteering Part 1
If you have not had the chance to offer your time, energy, and/or knowledge to an uplifting cause, I would recommend you look into organizations that offer such opportunities. First and foremost, I would recommend your local hospital. Hospitals absolutely love and adore volunteers that have a desire to lend a helping hand. Many positions are available from information volunteers, working in human resources, helping in the Emergency Department, or nearly any department. Instead of merely signing up for any position, offer the volunteer coordinator positions that you would like to fill. Give your recommendations to them. Put your foot forward and do something that you will enjoy. Volunteering can get boring, worthless, and old if you do not have a good attitude towards your area of responsibility. Furthermore, you will be able to make future contacts for people who will be willing to write letters of recommendation for your application. If the hospital is not your area right now, look for local organizations, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, United Way, YMCA, your local religious congregation, or any other equal organization. Another online resource is VolunteerMatch.Org. Starting early is the key to any area of volunteering. The sooner you start the sooner you will create lasting relationships, have wonderful experiences, and finally have some lasting happiness. |
